Sam Burns turned up the heat on the competition during moving day at The 154th Open Championship.

On Saturday, the 2026 U.S. Open runner-up made history by completing the lowest total score (127) in consecutive rounds in major history. Burns shot a 65 to enter Sunday’s final round at 10-under par, two strokes ahead of Ryan Fox and Si Woo Kim. During the second round, he tied the record for lowest single-round total score at a major, shooting a 62 to make up for an opening round 73 that threatened to leave him on the wrong side of the +1 cut line.

“I think today was just about getting as many looks as possible,” Burns told The Golf Channel about his approach heading into the day. “I feel like I’ve been playing well this whole week, and I thought if I could just give myself, you know, a bunch of birdie looks … that was gonna be our recipe.”

ESPN Insights notes that with a win Sunday, Burns can become just the third golfer since 2000 to win The Open after finishing second at the U.S. Open, joining Tiger Woods (2005) and Phil Mickelson (2013).
