Guardians add another option at catcher in trade with Giants

The Cleveland Guardians‘ catching situation has been a disappointment thus far. A trade with the San Francisco Giants may not lead to a significant change.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that the Guardians acquired catcher Patrick Bailey from the Giants. Pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson and the 29th pick in the 2026 MLB Draft are heading to San Francisco. Zack Meisel of The Athletic reported that the Guardians will option catcher Bo Naylor to the minors to make room for Bailey on the major league roster.

Naylor has been one of the worst players in the majors over the first six weeks of the 2026 season. He has posted a .143/.200/.238 batting line in his 90 plate appearances, hitting two homers and two doubles. Naylor has struggled defensively as well, costing Cleveland two runs at catcher while throwing out only 9.5% of would-be base stealers, leading to a decrease in playing time.

Patrick Bailey should be defensive upgrade for Cleveland Guardians if nothing else

Bailey had also begun to lose playing time in San Francisco as he struggled offensively. He had posted a .146/.213/.183 batting line in his 89 plate appearances, hitting one home run. However, the two-time Gold Glove winner has thrown out 25% of would-be base stealers and had saved a run for the Giants. He should provide a defensive upgrade over Naylor.

In exchange, the Guardians sent an intriguing pitching prospect in Wilkinson to the Giants. Ranked as the Guardians’ 13th-best prospect per FanGraphs, Wilkinson has a solid three-pitch mix despite a fastball that tops out in the lower 90s. He has performed well during his first look at Double-A, posting a 1.59 ERA and a 0.918 WHIP over his 28.1 innings, striking out 36 batters with nine walks.

Bailey should help the Guardians defensively going forward. The biggest question is whether or not he will make an impact on the lineup.
