What was supposed to be a triumphant Coachella headline moment for Justin Bieber quickly turned into one of the most talked-about performances of the year, but for all the wrong reasons.

Fans tuned in expecting a high-energy spectacle, but what they got instead sparked confusion, backlash, and a viral debate that keeps on going.

Justin Bieber’s Unusual Coachella Set Leaves Fans Confused

When Justin Bieber took the stage, the vibe was far from what many expected.

Dressed casually in a hoodie, shorts, and sunglasses, the global pop star delivered a stripped-back performance that leaned heavily on improvisation rather than spectacle.

Instead of launching into a polished set filled with his biggest hits, Bieber opened with tracks from his 2025 album “SWAG II.”

However, the biggest surprise came when he sat on a stool and began scrolling through YouTube videos of his own songs, streaming them as part of a 12-track medley.

The unconventional approach immediately left audiences puzzled, as many struggled to understand whether the moment was intentional artistry or simply underwhelming execution.

Bieber’s $10M Payday Sparks Backlash Online

The reaction online was swift and brutal. As word spread that Justin Bieber reportedly earned $10 million for the performance, criticism intensified on X.

One user wrote, “Not Justin Bieber scammed Coachella out of $10 million to play songs off of YouTube…”

Another added, “Justin Bieber giving us one of the laziest performances of all time.”

As more clips from Bieber’s performance surfaced, criticism continued to mount, with many viewers questioning whether the show lived up to its massive price tag.

Viral Moments And Memes Add To The Chaos

Beyond the performance itself, the visual elements added another layer of unpredictability.

Screens displayed viral internet clips, including Bieber’s own “is it not clocking to you” moment, alongside memes like “deez nuts” and “double rainbow.”

For some viewers, the chaotic mix felt disjointed rather than creative.

One frustrated fan posted per Page Six, “Justin Bieber is the worse(sic) headliner at Coachella in history because wtf your(sic) just sitting with a laptop.”

Another went even further, writing, “Justin Bieber 2026 coachella performance may just be the worst mass streamed/televised performance…ever?”

Still, not everyone was critical. Some defended the approach, arguing that using YouTube was “a little iconic” since “Justin became famous” on the platform.

Another fan even described him as a “mastermind,” while admitting “some won’t understand.”

The divided reactions only added to the viral nature of the moment.

In the midst of the criticism, Bieber attempted to turn the experience into something interactive.

At one point, he encouraged viewers to “help me with the songs tonight,” inviting fans to suggest tracks through livestream comments.

He then selected songs in real time, leaning further into the spontaneous nature of the set.

The performance also included a nostalgic twist, as Bieber played old YouTube clips of himself as a child.

One standout moment featured a nearly two-decade-old cover of a Ne-Yo track, a reminder of the viral beginnings that helped launch his career with the support of Usher and Scooter Braun.

For longtime fans, these callbacks offered a glimpse into his journey, even if the overall execution divided opinion.

Interestingly, the hype leading up to Bieber’s performance told a completely different story.

According to a report by The Blast, ticket prices surged after a leaked rehearsal clip went viral on TikTok, with fans scrambling to secure last-minute passes.

Classic hits like “Baby,” “One Less Lonely Girl,” and “Beauty and A Beat” echoing from the rehearsal created a wave of nostalgia that drove demand sky-high. Resale tickets reportedly climbed to as much as $4,000, while earlier prices had started at $649.

Behind the scenes, Bieber’s deal with Goldenvoice also raised eyebrows. He reportedly negotiated directly with the promoter, earning $5 million per weekend without an agent following his split from longtime manager Scooter Braun in 2023.

Despite the massive anticipation, the final result left many feeling underwhelmed. While Bieber has made memorable Coachella appearances in the past alongside stars like Ariana Grande, Chance the Rapper, Daniel Caesar, and Tems, this marked his first time headlining, and expectations were sky-high.

In the end, the performance achieved one undeniable outcome: everyone is talking about it.

Whether it was a misunderstood artistic risk or a misstep on a global stage, Justin Bieber’s Coachella set has firmly cemented itself as one of the most polarizing moments in recent music history.
