Once again, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark is in the eye of the storm.

Her latest incident involving Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas has been polarizing, with some thinking the WNBA shouldn’t have assessed Thomas with a flagrant 2 foul.

Thomas put her fist on Clark’s throat, and the league retroactively upgraded the call upon further review, leading to a one-game suspension for the Mercury star.

According to former Indiana Fever guard Sydney Colson, that punishment was harsh.

Sydney Colson disagrees with Alyssa Thomas’ suspension

“Do I think it was a Flagrant 2? Not at all,” Colson said on WNBA Countdown (h/t ESPNW). “But I also grew up in an era where it’s very physical and this was the least of what I would consider a Flagrant 2.”

While the game used to be more physical, arguing a foul after a player put her fist on another player’s throat might be a bit too much.

Colson was Clark’s backup with the Fever last season, joining the team after three years and winning two rings with the Las Vegas Aces.

She stepped up when Clark was out with injuries, but averaged just 2.4 points and 2.0 assists per game in 30 games before suffering a season-ending ACL injury. She’s now serving as an analyst while she hopes to return to the court at some point.

As for Clark, she’s become a widely polarizing figure in sports, with some even urging her to leave the WNBA.
