Why Ty Gibbs could be primed to score first career win at Bristol

No NASCAR Cup Series driver has been as hot as Ty Gibbs over the last five races.

Since starting the season with finishes of 23rd and 37th at Daytona and Atlanta, Gibbs has five straight finishes of sixth or better, including four top fives. He’s risen from 33rd to sixth in the Cup Series standings.

And while the fourth-year driver is still looking for his first career Cup Series win after 130 races, it could soon be on the horizon.

How soon? How about April 12, when the Cup Series returns from its Easter break at Bristol Motor Speedway?

Why Ty Gibbs can win at Bristol

Not only do Gibbs and the No. 54 team have all the momentum in the world, but Bristol has been one of the best tracks in his young Cup Series career. Gibbs has four top 10s in six Bristol starts, including finishes of third and 10th at the half-mile oval in 2025. He led 201 of 500 laps in the 2025 fall race.

Bristol will also be another test for NASCAR’s new 750-horsepower package at tracks under 1.5 miles in length. Gibbs finished fourth at Martinsville in the first official short track race with the new package, while his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Denny Hamlin, dominated the March 29 race at ‘The Paperclip’ before finishing runner-up to Chase Elliott.

Whether or not Gibbs scores his first career win at Bristol next week comes down to execution. If he is in contention, he’ll likely have to battle the likes of Hamlin, defending Bristol spring winner Kyle Larson and 2025 Bristol night race winner Christopher Bell for the checkered flag. All of those drivers have more experience than Gibbs and are racing without the pressure of trying to win their first Cup race.

But even those three drivers, who are now thought of as three of the best in the sport, had to earn their first victory somewhere.

Bristol could be Gibbs’ breakout moment as he looks to finally get to victory lane at the highest level of NASCAR.
