Why ‘Star Wars’ Fans Are Looking Forward To The Super Bowl

“Star Wars” fans might be looking forward to watching the Super Bowl to see the Seattle Seahawks face off against the New England Patriots, but others are hoping to see another glimpse at a galaxy far, far away. There is speculation that “The Mandalorian & Grogu” will get a full trailer to give viewers a better idea of what to expect from the film. The last “Star Wars” movie to hit theaters was 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” which wrapped up the 9-episode Skywalker Saga.

A teaser trailer was released in late 2025, but it seems more likely that a trailer for “The Mandalorian & Grogu” will be released during the Super Bowl to drum up hype for the movie and give fans a better sense of the plot. This wouldn’t be the first time a “Star Wars” film got an ad during the Super Bowl, as “Solo: A Star Wars Story” did a few years ago, so there is a precedent.

That was the last “Star Wars” film to have a May release, and although it bombed at the box office, Disney is hopeful that “The Mandalorian & Grogu” will do better. The movie is based on the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” which stars Pedro Pascal as the titular character and Baby Yoda/Grogu as his companion. Although many fans are interested in seeing them both on the big screen, creator Jon Favreau is also looking to add some star power to the cast with “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White and “Alien” star Sigourney Weaver.

While speaking at New York Comic-Con’s “Alien and Beyond” panel in October 2025, the “Aliens” actress opened up about her role as Colonel Ward in the 2026 “Star Wars” film. This is a brand-new character who has not appeared in “The Mandalorian” Disney+ series so far. During the panel, she revealed that Favreau reached out to her directly about the role, which prompted her to start watching the series.

“I was, of course, amazed by it and fell in love with it, and Pedro [Pascal] and Grogu,” Weaver said, as per PEOPLE magazine. “Also, I love how the Star Wars universe has — it’s not trying to pay off each movie with the whole backlog of movies. It’s now individual stories set in the same universe.”

In an interview with Variety, Jeremy Allen White also opened up on his experience in a galaxy far, far away. He revealed that he first ran into Favreau at a party, where he was approached about the role.

“I’ve been a fan of Jon Favreau’s for a very long time,” he explained. “We met at a party. I told him that, and he was like, ‘I have something I want to talk to you about. Can I call you?'”

That then led to a conversation about the series. “I said, ‘It’s a great show. You do a great job. I’d known Pedro Pascal for a little bit, and he’s great and has fun on it, and he loves you,’” he recalled. “He was like, ‘I want you to be in it.'”

That was when they started talking about his character, Rotta the Hutt. “And then he started explaining it and started talking about Rotta. I’d never done voice work,” White explained. “There isn’t any stop-motion work or anything physical like that.”

However, his voice might not be immediately recognizable to fans. “I did a bit of a voice, but then I think Jon also ended up tweaking it a little bit,” he said. “It was maybe a year ago. I did a couple of sessions. I’ve not seen any of it.”

However, he is looking forward to showing the film to his daughters. “I was excited about doing a job that is in this world of Star Wars, a world that I have admired for a very long time,” he said. “I was also excited about doing the movie that my daughters can go and see.”

Will ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Get An Ad At The Super Bowl?

It seems highly likely that the film will get an ad during the Super Bowl. Not only is this the first “Star Wars” film since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker,” but season 3 of “The Mandalorian” wasn’t exactly well-received by fans. The first teaser trailer also popped up online, then fizzled out without much impact on pop culture. It will be interesting to see the fans’ reaction to the new trailer… or the lack of one.

“The Mandalorian & Grogu” is set to debut in theaters on May 22, 2026.
