    Shonda Rhimes Posts Tribute to Eric Dane Following His Death

    Beloved actor Eric Dane, whose notable roles include “Grey’s Anatomy” and, more recently, “Euphoria,” sadly passed away on February 19 after a public battle with ALS. Now, following his passing, many of his friends, colleagues, and fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to the actor. One of the most recent includes “Grey’s Anatomy” creator and showrunner Shonda Rhimes.

    Shonda Rhimes Shared Kind Words For Eric Dane’s Legacy

    “Grey’s Anatomy” premiered on ABC in 2005 and became an instant hit. Dane then joined the series in its second season and remained on the cast until 2012, when his character died. Because of his years on the show, he and Rhimes developed a bond. Following his passing, she shared photos of them together on Instagram. The first appears to be backstage at an awards show, and the other is from a red carpet.

    Rhimes said in the caption, “Eric Dane was a beloved member of the Shondaland and Grey’s Anatomy families. He was truly a gifted actor whose portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan left an indelible mark on the series and on audiences around the world. We are grateful for the artistry, spirit, friendship, and humanity he shared with us for so many years. Our hearts are with his family, loved ones, and all who were touched by his work.”

    Fans Are Reacting To What The ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Creator Had To Say

    After Rhimes posted her tribute to Dane, fans took to the comments to highlight his legacy, especially in regard to “Grey’s Anatomy.” One person said, “HE WAS LOVED BY EVERYONE.” Someone else wrote, “He was the best. What a major loss.” Another mourning fan stated, “I knew you had to post about this. Eric was incredible in the show, and you were part of it. Thank you Shonda for comforting us.”

    Someone else remarked, “Eric was such a force of nature. He was a remarkable actor- and will be forever remembered as Dr. Marc Sloan/McSteamy- he played the role with such sensitivity and comedic timing, making him one of the greats and beloved characters of Grey’s Anatomy. I am sorry for your loss, and my condolences to all who loved and cared for him.”

    Eric Dane’s Family Released A Statement Following His Passing

    Dane’s family confirmed his death on the night of February 19. They did so by releasing an emotional statement to TMZ. The grieving family said, “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

    They then discussed his battle with ALS, stating, “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

    Dane leaves behind two children, Billie and Georgia. He remained married to Rebacca Geyheart until his death.

    The Actor Announced His ALS Diagnosis In 2025

    Dane remained active in Hollywood in the years leading up to his death in February 2026 with roles in shows like “Euphoria.” However, he opened up in April 2025 about his death, confirming to PEOPLE that he had been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

    He told the outlet, “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”

    Dane then spoke about continuing work, saying, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week. I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time.”

    Dane Will Be In ‘Euphoria’ Season 3

    As Dane stated when he revealed his ALS diagnosis, he filmed for the third season of “Euphoria.” Now, his representative has confirmed to PEOPLE that the actor completed his scenes before his tragic passing, meaning he will be featured when it returns in April. He reportedly began filming the season on April 14, 2025.

    Notably, Sam Levinson, the creator of “Euphoria”, released a statement following Dane’s passing. Per Deadline, he said, “I’m heartbroken by the loss of our dear friend Eric. Working with him was an honor. Being his friend was a gift. Eric’s family is in our prayers. May his memory be for a blessing.”

    “Euphoria” season three premieres on HBO and HBO Max on April 12.
