Rihanna’s surprise return to the stage should have been a celebration after years away from live performances.

Instead, the singer’s appearance alongside Jay-Z quickly turned into one of the internet’s biggest talking points, with fans fiercely divided over whether she still has the spark that once made her one of music’s most electrifying performers.

While many were simply thrilled to see the global superstar back in front of a crowd, others questioned whether she’s ready to make the musical comeback fans have been anticipating.

Concertgoers at Yankee Stadium got an unexpected treat on Sunday night when Rihanna emerged to perform with Jay-Z during his headlining set.

The pair reunited for their Grammy-winning hit “Run This Town,” before Rihanna stayed on stage to perform her 2015 anthem “B-tch Better Have My Money,” marking her first live performance since headlining the Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show in 2023.

The surprise appearance immediately generated excitement online, especially among fans who have spent years waiting for the singer to return to performing after shifting much of her attention to her successful business ventures.

However, the celebration didn’t last long before social media began filling with mixed reactions.

    Rihanna’s Performance Quickly Divided Fans

As videos from the concert spread across social media, opinions became increasingly polarized.

Some viewers praised the surprise appearance and enjoyed seeing Rihanna back on stage, despite the lengthy break.

Others, however, argued that the performance lacked the energy they had come to expect from the Grammy winner.

One user even branded her a “lazy performer,” arguing she wasn’t singing all of the lyrics.

Another commented, “Rihanna performs like the drunk aunty at the cookout. Why was she staggering lmaoooooooo.”

A third person also shared on X, “No one is talking about Rihanna’s poor vocals at Jay Z concert.”

A fourth user remarked, “Rihanna was performing like she finally got a break from her kids. She was like somebody auntie at Karaoke.”

    Rihanna Acknowledged She Was ‘Rusty’

“Y’all know I’m rusty, right? It’s been a while. Y’all with me right now?” 🥹

Rather than pretending everything went perfectly, Rihanna openly admitted returning to the stage wasn’t without its challenges.

Addressing the crowd between songs, she joked, “Y’all know I’m rusty, right? It’s been a while. Y’all with me right now?”

The comment resonated with many supporters, who appreciated her honesty and pointed out that it was her first public performance in two years.

Many also acknowledged her legacy, noting that seeing her back on stage was a delight. “Every surprise Rihanna performance just reminds fans how much they’ve missed seeing her on stage. She has an effortless charisma that very few artists can match, and the crowd’s reaction says it all,” one fan wrote.

Another commented, “The second Rihanna hit that stage, the whole show went from sold-out concert to cultural event,” while a third added, “She never misses. Rihanna brought the energy and owned the stage with that performance.”

Rihanna Made A Stylish Entrance Before Surprise Performance

Before surprising thousands of fans with her long-awaited return to the stage, Rihanna quietly slipped into Jay-Z’s Yankee Stadium concert in an outfit that carried a special meaning.

The singer was photographed arriving in a vintage-inspired black Roc-A-Fella basketball jersey, a nod to the record label co-founded by Jay-Z that helped launch her career after she signed to Def Jam as a teenager.

She paired the oversized jersey with relaxed black track pants, simple black flip-flops, and oversized Saint Laurent sunglasses, opting for understated comfort before changing into a custom caramel leather Saint Laurent ensemble for her performance.

Jay-Z Explained The Delay That Overshadowed Rihanna’s Return

Rihanna’s surprise return wasn’t the only moment from Jay-Z’s Yankee Stadium concert to dominate headlines.

The show itself became a major talking point after fans were left waiting for hours before the rapper finally took the stage, prompting him to later explain what caused the lengthy delay.

Addressing the crowd, Jay-Z said organizers had temporarily halted the show after thousands of ticketless people gathered outside the venue and some attempted to force their way through the entrances.

“Let me explain the delay to you guys,” he said per a report by The Blast, adding, “It was like 10,000 people outside, and we closed all the doors, and somebody rushed the door.”

The 56-year-old explained that he refused to begin performing while the situation remained unresolved because he didn’t “want to start the music and people get trampled.”

Apologizing to concertgoers, he added, “I’m really sorry for the inconvenience, but I had to make sure everybody was OK,” before thanking fans for their patience.
