Pockets of Denver Broncos fans were alarmed to learn that starting quarterback Bo Nix recently needed a second procedure related to the broken bone in his right ankle that he suffered in the divisional round of the playoffs this past January.

During a Wednesday appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport offered additional information about Nix’s ongoing recovery.

Was latest Bo Nix update surprising to Broncos?

“So basically, a little bit of a — kind of a clean-out, just make sure it was healthy, get some stuff out of there,” Rapoport said about Nix’s latest ankle procedure, per Jon Heath of Broncos Wire/USA Today and Sayre Bedinger of Fansided’s Predominantly Orange. “When he had it most recently examined, after the fractured ankle, they thought, ‘All right, maybe there’s going to be another surgery, just to make sure it’s healing properly, to clean some stuff up.’ So that’s what happened.”

Nix has a worrisome history of ankle issues going back to his high-school days, so anything that suggests he may not be healing as planned could spark concerns among Denver fans. Meanwhile, Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk shared that the Broncos’ on-field organized team activities are scheduled to begin on June 2. It sounds like Nix may remain a spectator up until the team’s summer break.

Will Bo Nix be ready for training camp?

“You’re not going to see him very much at OTAs or minicamp,” Rapoport added about Nix. “Which, like, honestly, who cares? But I would expect him to be ready for training camp or very close to training camp. Second surgery sounds bad — I don’t really think this is that bad. [Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott] had the same thing when he was coming back from his ankle and went on to play great. It’s a ‘thing,’ but I don’t think it’s anything that’s going to derail his season or anywhere close.”

Rapoport’s “very close” line could lead one to believe that Nix won’t be a full participant when training camp practices get underway in late July. While this seems to be a “nothing-to-see-here” matter as of the final day of April, Nix’s recovery could become an interesting storyline to follow during the first few weeks of the summer.
