Michael B. Jordan can handle a little awards-show chaos, but it was his mom, Donna, who ended up stealing the moment after Nikki Glaser’s raunchy Golden Globes joke left the room shook. Now, the “Sinners” star is spilling what it was really like watching her reaction play out in real time, revealing why she barely batted an eye, and how her phone lit up with memes before the night was even over.

Michael B. Jordan may be Hollywood’s certified heartthrob, but even he couldn’t help laughing when his mom’s reaction to a very NSFW Golden Globes joke stole the spotlight.

The 38-year-old actor stopped by “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Monday, January 12, where he recapped attending the Golden Globe Awards the night before and the moment host Nikki Glaser took a raunchy swing at him during her opening monologue. “I can’t believe it, we got two Michael B. Jordans,” Glaser said while referencing his roles in “Sinners.” “When I saw that, I was like Nikki B. Jerkin’ because that was awesome.”

The camera immediately cut to Jordan’s mom, Donna, sitting in the crowd next to the actor, and her reaction was instantly meme-able. She rolled her eyes and took a sip of her drink as the room laughed, a deadpan response that quickly became one of the night’s most replayed moments.

Glaser acknowledged she may have crossed a line once she realized Donna was in the crowd, quickly following up her joke with, “I’m so sorry. That should’ve been a DM.”

The Actor Says His Mom Doesn’t Get Shook By The Thirst

Jordan told Kimmel that while he had a great time at the Globes, his mom ended up being the real star of the evening. “I had fun, but my mom stole the show,” he said with a laugh, adding that Donna’s friends were blowing up her phone with memes and clips from the moment.

When Kimmel asked whether it makes his mom uncomfortable to see women openly thirsting over him, Jordan didn’t hesitate, especially considering he’s been dealing with that public perception for years, including being named PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2020. “I think by now she’s used to it,” Jordan explained. “So she just gives a little eye roll and just kinda keeps it pushing. She doesn’t really respond too much.”

And despite the awkwardness of being the butt of a spicy joke with his mom in the audience, Jordan made it clear he wouldn’t trade the experience. Asked about the pros and cons of bringing Donna as his date to award shows, he said the night was all positives, including hitting an afterparty where she had a blast.

“We went to an afterparty, we had a little fun, she was dancing and stuff. Mama had a good time,” he said, adding, “I don’t really think it’s a downside to bringing mom to an event, only upside.”

Jordan’s night at the Globes was still a win overall. He was nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for “Sinners,” which earned seven nominations and took home awards for Best Original Score and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

“I just want to thank the audience for showing up. It means the world. This movie was made by hundreds of people,” Ryan Coogler shared during the group’s Box Office Achievement acceptance speech. “We don’t always, when we work in the film business, wear tuxedos and get glammed out. It’s usually a grind. We were wearing performance fishing gear…we were in the swamps.”

“It was an honor on this movie to know that it was getting a theatrical release,” he continued. “We would remind people every day, in the dog days of summer in New Orleans, we would say, ‘Hey, big movie. People are going to see this, big theater.’ We didn’t know that they [the audience] would show up, and we thank them that they did.”
