A major, 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck in the South China Sea on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The temblor happened at 11:57 a.m. Eastern about 34 miles northwest of Kota Belud, Malaysia, data from the agency shows.

As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake’s reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map.

When aftershock data is available, the corresponding maps and charts include earthquakes within 100 miles and seven days of the initial quake. All times above are Eastern. Shake data is as of Sunday, Feb. 22 at 12:10 p.m. Eastern. Aftershocks data is as of Sunday, Feb. 22 at 2:28 p.m. Eastern.
