The Singer Says Her Weight Loss Journey Was Never About ‘Being Thin’

Over the past few years, Lizzo has frequently documented her health journey online, often posting selfies and updates about her progress.

The singer previously revealed that by early 2025, she had shed around 60 pounds, roughly 16 percent of her body fat, describing the process as a “weight release” rather than traditional weight loss.

In November 2025, the “About Damn Time” hitmaker addressed the conversation surrounding her body transformation in an essay shared on Substack.

After years of being associated with the body positivity movement, she explained that her personal journey was never about trying to become thin.

“It was never about being ‘thin’ for me,” she wrote. “I don’t even think it’s possible for me to be considered actually ‘thin.”

In the essay, Lizzo said she remains proud of her body and the physical marks that come with it.

“I will always have the stretch and the skin of a woman who carries great weight. And I’m proud of that. Even when the world doesn’t want me to be,” she said.

The artist also reflected on the difficult period that pushed her to rethink her health in 2023.

At the time, she said she felt “severely depressed” and “deeply suicidal” following a major controversy involving a lawsuit filed by former backup dancers who accused her of sexual harassment, fat-shaming, and fostering a hostile work environment, allegations she has strongly denied.

During that period, Lizzo said she struggled with intense emotional distress and initially began losing weight unintentionally while coping with what she described as self-neglect and personal turmoil.

Over time, therapy helped her change her mindset and focus more intentionally on caring for her body.

Lizzo revealed that her wellness journey began unexpectedly after she started taking Pilates classes, which became a way for her to process emotional pain.

“I used it as physical therapy. Sometimes I cried after sessions,” Lizzo wrote, explaining that the early weight changes were not deliberate.

Later, the “About Damn Time” singer recorded a video diary where she decided she wanted to lose weight intentionally, not because of external pressure, but because she wanted to feel better in her body and address unresolved emotional issues, including grief over her father’s death in 2009 and past toxic relationships.

Through therapy, Lizzo said she realized her weight had long served as a form of emotional protection.

“My weight had been a protective shield, a joyful comfort zone, and even sometimes a superhero suit to protect me through life,” she wrote. “My weight, like my hair, represented time. It stored energy. And I wanted to release myself from it. So, from that moment on, any weight on my physical body that was subtracted was not a pound ‘lost’ but a pound ‘released.'”

Lizzo Says Critics Focused On Her Body Instead Of Her Music

Lizzo admitted that despite her success, she often felt frustrated that her identity was overshadowed by discussions about her body, adding that “people could not see my talent as a musician because they were too busy accusing me of making ‘being fat’ my whole personality.”

She said she deliberately leaned into “hypersexual and vulgar” stage performances as a way to challenge stereotypes often placed on Black women in the entertainment industry.

Lizzo also addressed criticism from both sides of the conversation, noting that some people who once supported her body positivity message have now questioned her transformation.

“We’re in an era where the bigger girls are getting smaller because they’re tired of being judged,” she wrote. “And now those bigger girls are being judged for getting smaller by the very community they used to empower.”

Despite the changes, Lizzo emphasized that her core message remains the same: people should have the freedom to evolve without shame. “There’s nothing wrong with living in a bigger body. There’s nothing wrong with being fat. But if a woman wants to change, she should be allowed to change,” she wrote.
