Lions’ window closing after being booted from playoff race

The Detroit Lions championship window may be closing.

On Thursday, an error-filled 23-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings (8-8) eliminated the Lions (8-8) from playoff contention. One year after earning the NFC’s No. 1 seed and two years removed from a NFC championship game appearance, Detroit is set to enter a pivotal offseason that could determine if 2025 is a one-off or the beginning of the franchise’s decline.

Detroit Lions headed for pivotal offseason after being eliminated for playoff contention

The Lions turned the ball over six times in the Christmas Day loss, a game they needed to win to have a chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

Quarterback Jared Goff was 18-of-29 for 197 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He was also responsible for three of the team’s four fumbles.

The result could lead Detroit to reevaluate certain areas, particularly on offense. Line injuries played a role in the unit’s struggles, but it’s fair to question if head coach Dan Campbell should be calling plays next season. He took over the responsibility in November, but it might make sense to explore alternatives during the offseason.

The defense more than held up its end of the bargain, holding the Vikings to 161 total yards, including three net-passing yards. That somehow wasn’t enough to keep the Lions alive for a postseason berth. Instead, Detroit’s offseason will begin after Week 18.

For a team that’s been a leading NFC contender the past two seasons, it’s a precipitous drop. And the Lions could stay down without the appropriate moves over the months to come.
