LeBron James reportedly picked 76ers over Warriors for these reasons

A previous report revealed that the Philadelphia 76ers “came at” LeBron James “from all angles” during James’ free-agency journey. That process included 76ers players Tyrese Maxey,
Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown working “on James directly” until the 41-year-old agreed to sign a two-year, $8M deal with a player option to join the club.

On Friday afternoon, NBA insider Dave McMenamin of ESPN shared more information about why James picked the 76ers over the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors.

LeBron James thought 76ers gave him best chance to claim a fifth ring

“A source familiar with James’ thinking told ESPN that James’ choice hinged on the pursuit of a fifth championship,” McMenamin wrote. “After weighing his options, he landed on Philadelphia as the best situation for that.”

Before James confirmed his latest decision, it was learned that at least one of his former teammates felt that the future Hall of Famer could “go to the Finals with” a Heat team that acquired superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo
earlier this summer. James clearly felt that a lineup featuring Maxey, Embiid and Brown could become elite with him in it.

Additionally, it turns out that location, location, location meant a lot to James this time around

“The fact that James could live in New York City and commute to Camden for practices and Philadelphia for games…only added to the appeal,” McMenamin mentioned. “…Going to the Sixers could allow him to still live in NYC and, if he accomplishes his goal, win a title for a fanbase that’s waited decades (since 1983) to see their team hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy.”

Ahead of the July 4 holiday weekend, it was reported that the New York Knicks “should not be seen as a potential destination for James” because the reigning champions “are very happy with the core of their roster coming off the 2026 NBA title.”

Why LeBron James rejected the Warriors for the 76ers

Some previously assumed that James and Golden State star guard Stephen Curry were keen on playing with each other before they eventually ride off into the sunset of retirement. According to ESPN’s Anthony Slater, it sounds like the Warriors were never a realistic landing spot for the NBA’s King.

“The Warriors have a more limited roster and a tougher path to contention than other competitors,” Slater added. “…If James is still prioritizing a chase for a fifth ring, it was far more reasonable for him to look East, rather than join an older core that enters the season hobbled and only won 37 games last season. The Warriors could have pitched the spectacle of a legendary pairing with Stephen Curry, the proximity to his family in Los Angeles and the fun he could have in a relaxed environment with longtime friends, but that wasn’t enough. Plus, they didn’t make an offseason trade to make it more appealing. LeBron decided elsewhere, and the Warriors have been under the belief it was trending that way for weeks.”

Following Friday’s developments, one can’t help but wonder if James knew when he used the “trust the process” phrase at the Fanatics Fest event held in New York City last week that he would ultimately be signing with the Sixers.
