Jennifer Garner is opening up about a chapter of her life she rarely discusses publicly.

More than a decade after her separation from Ben Affleck, the actress reflected on how the breakup reshaped her priorities and career.

While Hollywood kept moving around her, Garner found herself focused on raising her children, making sacrifices that left her acting career largely on pause for years.

Garner and Affleck announced their split in 2015 after a decade of marriage. Together, they share three children: Violet, now 20, Finn, 17, and Samuel, 13.

While both parents continued to move forward with their lives after the separation, Garner recently revealed that the transition came at significant personal and professional costs.

Speaking to InStyle, the actress described the breakup’s aftermath as a difficult period for the family. She explained that caring for her children became her primary focus, leaving little room for the career she had spent years building.

“When my kids were little, I worked so little, and then we had such an upheaval in our family, that I really hardly worked for a long time,” Garner said.

During those years, school runs, family routines, and everyday responsibilities took precedence. While Affleck continued appearing in major films such as “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “The Accountant,” Garner largely stepped away from the spotlight to ensure stability at home.

The former couple finalized their divorce in 2018. Since then, Affleck has married and divorced Jennifer Lopez, while Garner has maintained a long-term relationship with businessman John Miller.

Now that her children are older and more independent, Jennifer Garner is enjoying a return to the profession she loves. The actress is preparing for her next major project, “The Five-Star Weekend,” an eight-episode Peacock miniseries scheduled to premiere on July 9, 2026.

For Garner, returning to work feels less like a comeback and more like reclaiming a part of herself that had been set aside for years.

“I’m also really grateful to have this part of my life back,” she shared.

The actress admitted that the past year and a half has allowed her to throw herself fully into acting again without the same family demands she once faced.

“[It’s a gift] to have this year and a half where I just indulged [in acting], because this job is very selfish,” she noted.

Garner went on to explain why acting often requires complete commitment.

She said, “It’s all about your schedule. It’s not about what the kids have going on at school. It’s not about pickups and drop-offs and making it home for dinner.”

With time no longer feeling unlimited, she is eager to embrace every opportunity that comes her way.

“I’m 54, I’m not going to be able to do it forever,” she said.

Despite decades in the entertainment industry, Garner insists her passion for acting has never been driven by fame or validation. Instead, she approaches the work with genuine enthusiasm.

The actress explained that stepping back into film and television has reminded her why she fell in love with performing in the first place.

“I feel lucky because I really come at [acting] from a place of joy. I’m not tortured. It’s not filling a hole. I just really love to do it. And I love to be around people who love to do it,” she shared.

That perspective has helped her enjoy this stage of her career without feeling pressured to prove anything.

Rather than chasing success, Garner appears focused on making the most of opportunities while she still can.

Her excitement is evident as she prepares to star alongside Chloe Sevigny, Gemma Chan, and Judy Greer in her upcoming series.

Jennifer Garner Refuses To Feel Guilty About Working

One of the more surprising admissions from Garner involved her attitude toward balancing work and motherhood. After years of putting family first, she no longer feels the need to apologize when professional commitments take her away from home.

“When I work, I don’t apologize to my kids for it,” Garner said.

She credits her children for being supportive and understanding as she has returned to acting.

She said, “I so thank them for being so sweet about it. But that’s part of life. Working hard is part of life, and messing up is part of life.”

Garner believes children benefit from seeing their parents pursue meaningful goals while also navigating life’s challenges.

“Tripping and falling – there’s room for all of it,” she said.

At the same time, she remains deeply committed to her role as a mother.

“I relate to that feeling of like, OK, I gave everything to mothering,” she noted. “I’m still their mom, I’m not going anywhere, I’m still all-in.”

Her comments suggest that while her career may once have taken a back seat, her dedication to her children has never changed.

As someone who has spent years juggling family responsibilities and professional ambitions, Jennifer Garner has developed a realistic outlook on life.

She believes many women place unrealistic expectations on themselves and would benefit from offering themselves more grace.

“You have to raise yourself at the same time,” Garner said.

She followed that thought with advice rooted in self-compassion, noting, “And just be so radically kind to yourself about how imperfect it is.”

The actress also rejected the idea that anyone can perfectly balance every aspect of life.

“There’s no such thing as balance. There’s no such thing as doing it right. And when the big moments happen, you are okay, and that’s on you to know and understand so your child feels your OK-ness,” she said.

For Garner, the years following her divorce may have slowed her career, but they also shaped the perspective she carries today.

Looking back, she seems less focused on what she missed professionally and more appreciative of the time she spent building a foundation for her family.

Now, with her children growing up and new acting opportunities arriving, she is embracing a chapter that allows her to enjoy both worlds.
