While the weather in London is still a mixed bag, the official start of spring is just a week away and warmer temperatures are just around the corner.

However, homeowners shouldn’t wait for warmer weather to protect their pets from fleas and ticks.

There is a common misconception that such blood-sucking insects thrive in warmer weather, but that doesn’t mean they disappear entirely when the seasons change.

According to PDSA veterinary nurse Shauna Walsh, fleas can live on household pets year-round, which can be uncomfortable for your furry friends and unpleasant for humans too.

“Many owners assume fleas are only a summer problem, but that’s not the case,” Walsh said.

“Fleas can live on pets and in our homes regardless of the weather, especially in centrally heated environments. Regular prevention and vigilance are key to keeping fleas away.”

Fleas can live on all walks of animal life, including dogs, cats, and rabbits, and also in carpets, bedding, and soft furnishings in the home.

If fleas aren’t treated effectively, this can also lead to more serious health conditions among your animals, so there is even more reason to act fast.

“Consistent prevention and prompt action are the best ways to avoid a flea issue turning into a bigger problem,” says Shauna.

Here is how to protect your pets from fleas all year round.

    Preventing and treating fleas

    1. Keep on top of treatment

Stay on top of your pets’ flea treatments, and ensure you regularly give them treatment when required.

There are many different treatments, and they may require reapplication at different times, so note which treatment you use for each pet.

Keeping a pet diary of all their treatments and vaccination dates is one of the easiest ways to stay on top of your pet’s needs.

    2. Trust prescription treatments

According to the PDSA, prescription products tend to be more reliable than “off the shelf” options, so consult with your vet next time to ensure you receive the best treatments.

    3. Never mix treatments meant for other species

According to Walsh, it’s essential that you ensure the treatment used on your animals is made for their species.

Never mix and match between different species, like cats and dogs, unless the treatment specifically allows it.

Use the correct products for your pets to keep them healthy and happy.

If you spot fleas on your pet, it’s equally important to clean your home.

As well as investing in a household flea spray, make sure you vacuum carpets and soft furnishings and run your pet’s bedding through the wash on a high temperature.

Breaking the flea lifecycle can help reduce the chance of reinfestation.

    5. When to contact your vet

It’s important to know when to reach out to your vet, and don’t hesitate to call specialists for advice on the right products and treatment schedule.

Regular health checks can go a long way in ensuring your pet stays healthy and happy.
