The NFL offseason continues to move along as the draft quickly approaches (April 23-25 in Pittsburgh), but that is not the only thing making headlines right now.

On Tuesday, The New York Post published photos of New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and The Athletic NFL insider Dianna Russini in an article that showed them holding hands and hugging at a luxurious Arizona hotel.

Both released statements on the matter and denied any wrongdoing. While former MVP-winning quarterback Boomer Esiason acknowledged that he believed them, he also expressed concern for how this could impact Russini going forward.

Boomer Esiason comments on Mike Vrabel, Dianna Russini’s viral hotel photos

“It’s not the salacious part of the story that’s really going to be putting her in a difficult position. It’s going to be the journalism part of the story,” Esiason said Wednesday on his “Boomer and Gio” radio show. “… And that’s really what this is all about, whether or not she can recover from that kind of feeling within the business. That’s the issue. I’m not worried about the salacious part of it. I actually do believe both of them, but what I worry about for her is just that the general look of somebody who covers the league holding hands, hugging or whatever.”

The New York Times Co., which owns The Athletic, also denied the allegations and has backed Russini since the photos were made public.

“For her, professionally, it’s the conflict-of-interest part of it,” Esiason continued. “But it sounds like The Athletic is certainly backing her and supporting her. And you know, they came out both with statements. … It’s a salacious story. It’s a slow news day, and lo and behold, you got this.”

After the viral moment that took place, Vrabel and Russini attended the league meetings in Phoenix — Vrabel for an NFL Competition Committee meeting and Russini for reporting duties.

Vrabel is a three-time Super Bowl champion as a linebacker with the Patriots from 2001-08 and is coming off a loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX. Russini, meanwhile, began working for ESPN in 2015 before her current stint with The Athletic started in 2023.

The NFL offseason is still in its early stages, but the viral photos of Vrabel and Russini are certainly garnering a lot of attention. Even if it was simply just a close interaction and embrace between the two, the fact that the whole situation is blowing up shows how big of a deal people are making of it and the predicament that Russini could find herself in as a reporter.

The two are prominent figures in their respective positions, but there is no doubt that Russini’s journalistic integrity will be questioned going forward after the viral moment between her and Vrabel.
