    Ask me to picture the world’s tallest waterfall and I see water leaving a cliff, breaking into mist and landing with a roar. That picture works for Angel Falls in Venezuela. It fails completely in the Denmark Strait.

    Between Greenland and Iceland, cold water from the Nordic Seas flows over a submerged ridge and descends beneath warmer Atlantic water. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calls the result the world’s largest waterfall and puts its height at about 11,500 feet, or 3.51 kilometers.

    That is more than three and a half times the total height usually assigned to Angel Falls. Yet the comparison needs one important qualification: the Denmark Strait cataract is an oceanographic overflow, not a river dropping through air. Angel Falls remains the conventional record holder among waterfalls on land.

    How water can fall through water

    The mechanism begins with density. Water becomes denser when it cools, while salt content also affects how much mass a given volume contains. In the far North Atlantic, very cold water approaches the Denmark Strait from the Nordic Seas. South of the submarine ridge, it encounters warmer water from the Irminger Sea.

    The colder, denser water slides below the lighter water and spills across a sill about 600 meters beneath the surface. Gravity then carries it down the Greenland continental slope.

    Nothing has to open a gap in the ocean. Two water masses can occupy different layers for roughly the same reason oil floats above water in a glass. In this case, however, both layers are water, and temperature and salinity create the density contrast.

    The word “fall” can also mislead. This is not an empty shaft through which water drops freely. It is a dense, bottom-hugging current moving downslope beneath lighter water.

    What the 11,500-foot measurement means

    NOAA’s infographic gives the cataract a height of approximately 11,500 feet. Elsewhere on the same page, the agency describes a series of cataracts beginning around 2,000 feet below the surface and descending toward depths near 10,000 feet south of the strait. These descriptions are ways of summarizing a vast, uneven submarine landscape, not measurements of one clean vertical wall.

    The overflow spreads across a broad current, follows the seafloor and mixes with surrounding water as it travels. Oceanographers therefore use terms such as “overflow,” “plume” and “cataract.” The popular phrase “underwater waterfall” is useful, but it compresses a complicated three-dimensional flow into a familiar image.

    For the land record, Guinness World Records lists Angel Falls, also known as Kerepakupai Merú, at 3,212 feet in total. Its longest single drop is 2,648 feet. Guinness also notes some debate over how the total should be counted.

    So is the Denmark Strait cataract really the tallest waterfall? In oceanographic and popular-science usage, yes. Under the ordinary geographic definition of a waterfall exposed to air, Angel Falls keeps its place. The apparent contradiction disappears once the categories are made explicit.

    A flow measured in sverdrups

    The hidden cataract is not only tall. NOAA estimates its downward flow at more than 123 million cubic feet, or 3.5 million cubic meters, each second. Oceanographers write that amount as roughly 3.5 sverdrups. One sverdrup equals one million cubic meters per second.

    A 2017 analysis in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans estimated the mean transport of Denmark Strait Overflow Water at 3.2 sverdrups from 1996 to 2016, with an uncertainty of about 0.5 sverdrups. A later ship-based analysis reported a total mean overflow transport of about 3.54 sverdrups.

    Those figures are close, but their differences matter. This is not a pipe with a fixed output. The current varies, instruments sample only part of it and researchers have to decide which combinations of density and direction count as overflow water. Estimates also change as measurement arrays improve.

    Even the lower figure is difficult to imagine. At 3.2 million cubic meters each second, the cataract would move an Olympic swimming pool’s worth of water thousands of times over before a person could finish reading this sentence.

    How scientists see a waterfall hidden in darkness

    From a ship, there is no obvious line marking the cataract below. The sea does not vanish over an edge. NOAA says its turbulence goes undetected without scientific instruments.

    Researchers anchor moorings to the bottom and equip them with current meters, temperature and salinity sensors, and Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers. The profilers infer water velocity from the Doppler shift in reflected sound. As Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution explains, fixed moorings record the current as it passes, while instruments placed at different depths capture changes through the water column.

    Long records are essential because the overflow can vary over days as well as years. The 2017 transport analysis drew on measurements dating to 1996 and used an expanded five-mooring array to improve coverage beyond the swift core of the flow. Ship surveys add detailed cross sections of temperature, salinity and velocity.

    This is why “hidden” is more than a dramatic adjective. The cataract cannot be watched from the surface in the way a land waterfall can. It exists for us as a pattern reconstructed from seafloor maps, density profiles and years of current records.

    Why this invisible fall matters far beyond the strait

    After crossing the sill, the cold water does not simply collect at the bottom. It descends, entrains surrounding water and feeds the deep western boundary current. A 2020 study in the Journal of Physical Oceanography describes Denmark Strait overflow as the largest contributor to the lower limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.

    That circulation carries warm water northward near the surface and returns colder, denser water southward at depth. It helps move heat, carbon, oxygen and nutrients around the Atlantic. The Denmark Strait is one of the narrow gateways through which dense Nordic water enters that deep return flow.

    Calling the overflow a waterfall makes its motion intuitive. Calling it a density current explains why oceanographers care about it.

    What I find most interesting is not that Angel Falls has somehow lost its title. It has not, at least not in the category most people mean. The more revealing point is that Earth can produce a much larger version of a familiar process without giving us any surface spectacle at all.

    The planet’s tallest hidden cataract is not a white ribbon on a cliff. It is cold water sliding beneath warm water in darkness, measured by instruments and woven into the circulation of an entire ocean.
