Broncos HC Sean Payton delivers encouraging Bo Nix update

Entering the 2026 NFL season, expectations for the Denver Broncos are significantly different from those they were a year ago.

After reaching the playoffs and appearing to find their franchise quarterback in Bo Nix, Denver is no longer viewed as a team simply building for the future.

Broncos HC Sean Payton provides injury update on Bo Nix

Broncos fans received some positive news when head coach Sean Payton addressed Nix’s recovery from offseason ankle surgery.

“He’ll clearly be ready in time for training camp,” Payton said when speaking with Zach Stevens of DNVR.

The tone, despite how little Payton’s response contained, was to the point. With training camp just around the corner, Payton did not give the prototypical answer that usually contains some mystery when discussing injuries. He spoke with assurance, did not indicate that the team would pivot from its starting-quarterback approach if something went wrong and instead painted a picture in which Nix would enter camp healthy and eager to capitalize on the momentum of a big first season.

Bo Nix and the Broncos have raised the bar

The Broncos’ 2025 season ultimately ended in a disappointing 10-7 AFC Championship Game loss to New England, but the bigger picture remains encouraging. Denver entered last season with modest expectations and finished just one victory shy of a Super Bowl appearance.

Now, with Nix expected to be healthy and another year removed from his rookie campaign, the Broncos have every reason to believe their window of contention is only beginning to open. The challenge for Denver is no longer proving it belongs among the AFC’s best teams. It is proving it can finish the job.

Bo Nix confirms Sean Payton’s stance

When Nix was approached about what his status would be for next season, he confirmed Payton’s remarks.

“I could go full go right now if they wanted me to,” said Nix.

The biggest takeaway from Nix’s responses is just how nonchalant he seemed. Quarterbacks who undergo surgery in the offseason, especially something that’s in season like this, usually go into news conferences with the “take it day by day” mantra or “the doctors are guiding the process.”

Nix did not touch on that, instead implying he could be back full throttle immediately if the circumstances required it. This sort of attitude is excellent for the Broncos and allows them to head into training camp not worrying about their quarterback being available.

Higher expectations await Bo Nix and the Broncos in 2026

While the Broncos are still in the process of preparing for 2026, all evidence suggests that Nix will be ready when training camp opens. Based on the confidence expressed by both Payton and Nix, Denver appears to view his recovery as a non-issue rather than a concern.

With his health concerns put aside, the most important thing that the Broncos will look to see is if Nix can build on his performance last season and carry them deep into the playoffs; if he can make another improvement to his game, the Broncos could very well be able to cement themselves among the top dogs in the AFC.
