Steelers reportedly making Sorsby moves after supplemental draft decision

People connecting dots have recently suggested that the Pittsburgh Steelers could take a flier on controversial quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who formally filed paperwork
to enter this year’s supplemental draft for the NFL on Tuesday.

During the latest edition of the “Yinziders” podcast, Steelers reporter Mike DeFabo of The Athletic revealed that the club hasn’t completely closed the door on acquiring Sorsby later this summer.

Brendan Sorsby’s gambling history not a “disqualifier” for Steelers?

“It sounds like right now the Steelers are currently doing their homework,” DeFabo said about Sorsby, per Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot. “It sounds like that would, at this point, not automatically be a disqualifier for the Steelers.”

DeFabo was referencing how Sorsby previously checked into a residential treatment program to deal with a gambling addiction and has admitted to gambling on Indiana games, along with other sporting events, when he was with that university. While some think certain players will have a problem accepting Sorsby as part of the locker room, it nevertheless seems likely that a team will accept the risk associated with grabbing him.

Taking Sorsby in the supplemental draft would cost Pittsburgh its corresponding pick in next year’s NFL Draft. According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, the supplemental draft will take place “on or before July 16.”

“At this point,” DeFabo added about the Steelers’ interest in Sorsby, “it seems they are still in that process of gathering more information and trying to figure out what exactly, and how far exactly, they’d be willing to go.”

According to multiple reports, the Cleveland Browns won’t try to land Sorsby next month.

When could the Steelers take Brendan Sorsby in the supplemental draft?

Well-known draft guru Dane Brugler of The Athletic recently said that his “best guess is a team uses a Day 3 pick on Sorsby.” According to Matthew Marczi of Steelers Depot, Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said on the latest edition of the “Steelers Collective” program that the club wouldn’t spend higher than a fifth-round choice on Sorsby.

“I will say Brendan Sorsby will not end up with the Steelers,” Fittipaldo added. “But if they did, I think it would be a fifth-round pick.”

Along with future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers, the Steelers have longtime backup Mason Rudolph, 2025 rookie Will Howard and 2026 third-round draft pick Drew Allar in their quarterback room. There has thus far been no indication that head coach Mike McCarthy is ready to give up on Howard or Allar, neither of whom has taken a single in-game regular-season snap as a pro.
