Five important NFL OTA storylines to monitor

OTAs are in full swing across the NFL, offering the first real look at how rosters are taking shape. It’s still early, and pads haven’t been put on yet, but coaches, players and media members are already buzzing about standout performers and competitions.

Here are five important storylines in OTAs to monitor:

Fernando Mendoza taking command with Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders’ No. 1 overall pick has been “as advertised,” according to head coach Klint Kubiak during his interview via NFL.com. Mendoza is asking sharp questions, processing quickly and showing leadership.

He’s already building chemistry with the receiving corps and looks poised to start as a rookie if needed. He’s had clips during OTAs that have trended as outsiders have compared his mechanics to Tom Brady’s. Overall, this could accelerate the rebuild.

New head coach Todd Monken spoke to the media on Wednesday, and he was not happy. “We threw interceptions in 7-on-7 for God’s sake. I mean, who does that?” He continued to explain that there’s no pass rush.

Deshaun Watson has taken an early edge with highlight throws (including a deep touchdown to rookie wide receiver Denzel Boston), but reps are rotating heavily among Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and rookie Taylen Green. Monken is keeping all options on the table.

With projected starter Jacoby Brissett MIA, third-round rookie Carson Beck, and veteran Gardner Minshew are splitting the majority of snaps for the Cardinals.

Beck is flashing arm talent, decision-making and poise, positioning himself to be their day-one starter if nothing changes soon.

Tua Tagovailoa vs. Michael Penix Jr. heating up

The Atlanta Falcons quarterback situation is one of the most intriguing position battles in the NFL right now. With new head coach Kevin Stefanski installing his system, the team is getting a feel for veteran Tua Tagovailoa and 2024 first-round pick Michael Penix Jr.

Penix is coming off a late-season-ending injury in 2025, which could halt his development. As of now, there is no frontrunner in the competition.

With more ongoing legal troubles for Rashee Rice, other wide receivers will have to step up for the Chiefs and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. That’s what the Chiefs’ fifth-round pick, Cyrus Allen, is doing.

He’s been a standout in 7-on-7 and individual drills, showing good route-running and reliable hands. Coaches are giving him opportunities across the slot and outside, where his quickness and YAC ability could shine in head coach Andy Reid’s scheme.
