Heidi Klum’s Offbeat Met Gala Look Splits Opinions

Model and TV personality Heidi Klum made a dramatic entrance at the Met Gala in a marble statue-inspired ensemble that immediately caught attention online. While some praised the bold and artistic fashion choice, others were less than impressed, leaving social media divided over one of the most unique looks on fashion’s biggest night.

The 2026 Met Gala theme is “Costume Art,” with attendees invited to “express their own relationship to fashion as an embodied art form.” Heidi Klum took the prompt to the extreme, transforming herself into a living statue with the ensemble she chose.

The 52-year-old model turned heads with her avant-garde fashion, a striking look inspired by classical sculptures that juxtaposed rigid, stone-like textures with cascading fabric. The choice created a dramatic visual contrast, setting her apart from other Met Gala attendees.

In an Instagram post, Klum explained her vision, saying that she loves it when fashion and art collide. “Every fold, every contour, every detail is intentional, capturing both strength and softness in a way that feels almost impossible. A one-of-a-kind design that doesn’t just dress the body, but elevates it into art itself,” she wrote.

The Model Turned To Longtime Collaborator Mike Marino

Almost too hard to believe, one piece of marble transformed into an intricate, almost impossible masterpiece by a quite gifted European.

Instead of working with high-end fashion houses for the Met Gala, Klum chose to team up with her longtime collaborator, Mike Marino, an award-winning special effects and prosthetic makeup designer. Marino has worked with the model for several of her headline-making Halloween costumes throughout the years.

As noted by Klum, Marino skillfully sculpted spandex and latex “with extraordinary precision” to mimic the visual characteristics of marble. The inspiration behind the look was the “Veiled Vestal,” a marble sculpture created by Italian sculptor Raffaelle Monti that was commissioned in 1846. “This look blurs the line between fashion and fine art. A piece of fashion art, reimagined in motion,” Klum explained.

Heidi Klum Chose Fashion Over Comfort

Klum embraced her statuesque look at the Met Gala, prioritizing visual impact over practicality. The TV host was seen climbing The Met’s steps stiffly, carefully holding her dress up as she ascended the grand staircase. On TikTok, Klum uploaded a short clip, showing her lying down rigidly inside a vehicle in her marble statue attire. It isn’t clear whether she was on the way to the Met Gala or heading home.

The model previously talked about her fashion choices, telling Vogue, “I think comfort is key, but I always want it to be glamorous… Fashion is fun, and you can’t take it too seriously. I like to have fun with it.”

The Living Statue Ensemble Garnered Mixed Reactions

Klum’s unique take on the Met Gala theme sparked mixed reactions online, with some praising her for the bold choice and others questioning it.

“What is this???” one commenter asked, saying that Klum looked like a “plaster cast of the Statue of Liberty” beside other attendees who chose “elegant” looks. “I hate it when they turn the Met into a Halloween costume party,” another user wrote. Another person commented that while the design was awesome, it didn’t make Klum beautiful.

Meanwhile, others praised Klum’s unique take on the theme, with one writing, “she understood the assignment,” followed by a fire emoji. “Finally someone doing it right AND with a sense of humor,” one added. One person was amazed, saying that Klum’s look is something that will be referenced years down the line.

Some people couldn’t say whether they liked it, but many agreed that at least Klum followed the Met Gala theme.

    Heidi Klum’s Halloween In May

Many also commented that Klum dressed up for Halloween instead of the Met Gala. The model is known for throwing an annual Halloween party, where she dresses up in impressive and sometimes unusual costumes. Over the years, her costumes have become more elaborate, at one point dressing up as a worm.

Klum sought Marino for many of her looks, including her 2025 Medusa costume, 2018’s Princess Fiona, 2015’s Jessica Rabbit, and an elderly version of herself in 2013.

The idea came to her as she was looking for a “really cool” Halloween party in Manhattan, but couldn’t find one. Klum’s first Halloween bash was in 2000 and has been hosted every year since then, except for 2012 due to Hurricane Sandy, and 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.
