How to maximise your bank holidays in 2027

With Easter now over, attention is turning to the next chances for a well-earned break.

The next bank holiday in the UK falls on Monday, May 4, shortly followed by the Spring bank holiday on Monday, May 25.

While those dates offer welcome long weekends in the near term, it is 2027 that is shaping up to be especially appealing for anyone hoping to make the most of their annual leave.

Thanks to the way several bank holidays fall, and the use of substitute days when holidays land on a weekend, next year’s calendar creates some particularly generous opportunities for extended time off.

The biggest draw comes around Christmas, when the festive calendar could leave many workers facing a three-day working week and, with a little planning, a much longer break than usual.

Full list of 2027 bank holidays in England and Wales

    January 1 – New Year’s Day

    March 26 – Good Friday

    March 29 – Easter Monday

May 3 – Early May bank holiday

May 31 – Spring bank holiday

August 30 – Summer bank holiday

December 27 – Christmas Day (substitute day)

December 28 – Boxing Day (substitute day)

With a bit of forward planning, 2027’s bank holiday calendar offers several opportunities to turn a handful of annual leave days into much longer breaks.

How to maximise your bank holidays in 2027

With Good Friday falling on March 26 and Easter Monday on March 29, taking four days off from March 30 to April 2 would have created a 10-day break using just four days of leave, a pattern that can be applied to other bank holiday periods.

In early May, the Early May bank holiday lands on Monday, May 3. Booking four days off from May 4 to May 7 would result in a nine-day stretch away from work. A similar approach can be taken later in the month, with the Spring bank holiday on Monday, May 31.

Taking leave from June 1 to June 4 again turns four days of annual leave into nine consecutive days off.

The Summer bank holiday on Monday, August 30 provides another opportunity. By booking time off from August 31 to September 3, you can extend the long weekend into a nine-day break at the end of summer.

However, the most generous window comes at the end of the year.

    Three-day work week in 2027

With Christmas Day and Boxing Day falling on a weekend, their substitute bank holidays will be observed on Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28. This means a three-day working week.

But why stop there? By adding just a couple of extra leave days around this period, workers can significantly extend their time off, particularly when combined with New Year’s substitute bank holiday on January 3, 2028.

For those looking to make the most of their annual leave, the key is simple: book early, focus on the days surrounding bank holidays, and take advantage of how weekends and substitute days align.
