“Grey’s Anatomy” is set to continue its historic run after ABC renewed the long-running medical drama, but the celebration comes with an unexpected change.

Two veteran cast members are preparing to exit, while creator Shonda Rhimes earlier reflected on the emotional origin behind the beloved series.

As milestones mount, departures and revelations signal a pivotal new chapter for the franchise ahead.

ABC has confirmed that there will be yet another season of “Grey’s Anatomy,” after renewing it for Season 23.

The decision extends the show’s remarkable streak as the longest-running primetime medical drama in American television history, while also solidifying its place as the network’s longest-running scripted series.

Created by Shonda Rhimes, the show continues to defy expectations in an era when long-running network dramas rarely maintain their relevance.

The upcoming season is expected to push the series past the 475-episode milestone, another proof of its enduring popularity and cultural impact.

Despite shifting television habits, the medical drama has continued to attract viewers across both traditional broadcasts and streaming platforms.

The renewal also positions the show firmly within ABC’s broader programming lineup for the 2026–27 season.

Alongside other returning titles, “Grey’s Anatomy” remains a cornerstone of the network’s identity, proving that its blend of emotional storytelling and high-stakes medical drama still resonates with audiences.

While the renewal is a milestone, it also arrives with notable departures.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, longtime cast members Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd are set to leave the series following the May 7 season finale, which McKidd himself is directing.

Their exits mark another transition for a show that has undergone significant cast evolution over the years.

Despite these changes, several familiar faces remain. Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson, and James Pickens Jr. continue to anchor the series, having appeared since its debut.

Pompeo’s role has shifted in recent seasons, with reduced on-screen time, but her presence as narrator and executive producer keeps her closely tied to the show’s direction.

The cast reshuffle reflects a pattern that has defined “Grey’s Anatomy” throughout its run.

Characters have come and gone, yet the series continues to reinvent itself, allowing new storylines to emerge while maintaining connections to its past.

Beyond its longevity, the show’s performance continues to impress.

“Grey’s Anatomy” remains a solid draw for ABC, particularly when delayed viewing and streaming are factored in.

The series more than doubles its initial on-air audience of 2.22 million viewers after a week of additional viewing, demonstrating strong engagement beyond its live broadcast.

The show also ranks among the top 15 network series in the adults 18-49 demographic, excluding live sports.

Its extensive library on Hulu and Netflix continues to perform well in Nielsen’s streaming ratings, giving the series a second life for both longtime fans and new viewers discovering it for the first time.

This dual success across broadcast and streaming has helped sustain the show’s relevance.

Even as television consumption shifts toward on-demand viewing, “Grey’s Anatomy” remains a reliable performer, reinforcing ABC’s confidence in its continued run.

As the series moves forward, Rhimes has been reflecting on how it all began.

During an appearance on Serena Williams’s “Stockton Street” podcast, she described how personal introspection following a national tragedy influenced the show’s creation.

“And I said to myself, ‘If my life ended tomorrow, what will I regret having not done?’ And the answer was be a mom,” Rhimes told Williams.

“So nine months and two days after 9/11, my daughter was born,” she added, describing her adoption of her daughter, Harper, as an “amazing” experience.

Rhimes explained that motherhood changed her daily routine. “You know, you have a baby, you don’t want to go anywhere. You want to be at home,” she said.

Spending more time indoors led her to notice a lack of compelling television content.

“And so Grey’s was literally a show that I wrote because I wanted to watch that show,” she said. “I learned how to write TV by writing that show.”

The creative process involved experimentation and uncertainty. “There’s a lot of things I tried. There’s a lot of things I didn’t know if it would work,” she said. “And what was great was the thing in my head was the thing that audiences really wanted to see.”

    Creator Defends Bold Storytelling Decisions

Shonda Rhimes has also addressed the show’s willingness to make dramatic and sometimes heartbreaking narrative choices.

Speaking with TODAY, she emphasized her storytelling priorities. “My job is to be the keeper of the story,” she said. “My job is not to be the keeper of the fans. My job is not to be the keeper of my friendships with actors. My job is to do what the story dictates.”

She described this approach as challenging but necessary for maintaining creative integrity. The show’s history includes several shocking character deaths, including the loss of beloved figures.

Reflecting on those moments, Rhimes acknowledged the difficulty of such decisions.

“I look back on some of the deaths, on some of the characters, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God. I can’t believe I did that,’” she said. “Now in perspective, but at the time it was what the story dictated to me so clearly that there was no other choice.”

As “Grey’s Anatomy” heads into its next season, those same bold storytelling instincts continue to shape its future.

With cast changes, strong ratings, and renewed creative reflection, the long-running drama shows no sign of slowing down, even as it evolves for a new generation of viewers.
