Five MLB players who could be traded during spring training

Spring training trades have become a rarity in recent years. Baseball operations heads want to see how their players perform in Grapefruit League and Cactus League games before making any significant roster moves.

However, there is a sense around MLB that some trades could happen this spring, as many teams still have holes to fill. Here is a look at some players who could be on the move between now and Opening Day.

Manager Clayton McCullough has already announced the right-hander as the Marlins’ Opening Day starter. Miami’s starting pitching depth was thinned out in the offseason when left-hander Ryan Weathers was traded to the New York Yankees, and Edward Cabrera was dealt to the Chicago Cubs. Nevertheless, Alcantara is in the final year of his contract, and the Marlins will part with him if they can get a significant return.

The third baseman had a down year offensively in 2025, and it’s nearing time to clear a spot in the lineup for shortstop prospect Aidan Miller and move Trea Turner to third base. The Phillies could use pitching, a starter for the bottom of the rotation and some middle relievers.

Seemingly, not a day goes by that the outfielder is not involved in a trade rumor. Because of the Red Sox’s outfield depth, Duran is likely to open the season as their designated hitter. He should be able to fetch some young starting pitching in return.

The Pirates don’t need to dump salary for a change, but offloading the $55 million that the right-hander will make over the next three seasons would enable Pittsburgh to make some serious moves at the trade deadline or next winter. Keller could also land a needed power-hitting third baseman.

The first baseman no longer has a starting job after the Orioles signed Pete Alonso to a five-year, $155 million contract in free agency during the offseason. Mountcastle’s lack of versatility depresses his trade value, but he has some power, and the Orioles should be able to get a decent pitcher if they deal him.
