49ers earn major Trent Williams victory ahead of 2026 NFL Draft

It was reported earlier in April that the San Francisco 49ers and star left tackle Trent Williams could come to an agreement before the start of the 2026 NFL Draft that would result in the 37-year-old remaining with the club.

The two parties had been involved in a contract dispute this offseason, but it was learned on Monday that Williams now has millions of reasons to happily stay with the 49ers through at least all of 2026.

What 49ers gave Trent Williams to keep him

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, Williams and the 49ers have agreed to terms on a two-year, $50M deal.

“The new deal includes $37M fully guaranteed and a $22M signing bonus,” Rapoport added. “The veteran OT gets $24.5M this year and is now under contract through the 2027 season.”

As Matt Barrows of The Athletic shared, Williams previously was set to enter the final year of a three-year, $82.7M contract that had no guaranteed money remaining attached to it. Meanwhile, the 49ers now know that their most important protector for quarterback Brock Purdy will be sticking around for at least another campaign.

Per Pro Football Focus, Williams earned a 91.5 overall grade for the 2025 season. That ranked him third among 89 qualified offensive tackles for the campaign. The 49ers have no like-for-like Williams replacement on their roster, and none currently exists on the open market.

Can Trent Williams help keep Brock Purdy healthy?

The previously mentioned Purdy has somewhat of a worrisome injury history coming off his fourth pro season. Most recently, he was limited to just nine regular-season starts this past campaign due to what became a lingering toe issue.

Questions about Purdy’s ability to stay healthy may have something to do with why the Niners haven’t traded backup Mac Jones at what they would consider to be a discounted price this offseason. On Monday, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said that Jones is not “expected to go anywhere” this week, as his “market never heated up this offseason.”

The 49ers will now hope that Williams will help keep Purdy healthy and upright from Week 1 of the 2026 season through what could become a lengthy playoff run for the club.
