Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby has become one of the most popular players in college football, but not for the right reasons.
He was found to have placed thousands of wagers, including several on his own team, and will still retain his college eligibility due to a favorable court ruling.
That has sparked tons of backlash, with other programs even threatening not to play Texas Tech if they keep Sorsby on the team.
For Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry, however, people should just cut the kid some slack. When asked about this case on 92.3 The Fan, he seemed to endear himself to the young quarterback.

“The reality of it is, we’re all gonna screw up, and some certainly mistakes are greater in magnitude than others, but I think the most important thing in Brendan’s case is what he does from here,” said Berry. “Obviously, it is a great first step to get the help that he needs. But then, it’s like, what is around him, what is he doing to make sure he can maintain healthy habits from there?”
The Browns executive then urged people not to judge Sorsby so harshly and quickly:
“I think probably within society, so to speak, we could all stand to use a little bit more grace,” he added.
This might not be anything, but it certainly cannot be overlooked. The Browns still need a franchise quarterback, and they would’ve certainly been in the mix to get Sorsby if he declared for the supplemental draft.
This isn’t the first time Berry has given Sorsby the benefit of the doubt, which might actually be the smart thing to do here.
Even if he doesn’t declare for the supplemental draft, he’s still expected to be a first-round pick next season.
Berry might feel a certain way about Sorsby as a player or a person, but he can’t shut down any possibility or burn a bridge this early in their potential relationship, knowing that there’s a chance — even a tiny one — that he might end up in Cleveland.
Whether Sorsby should be suspended or not is a debate for another day, but he’s certainly talented enough to have a future in the National Football League.
And, judging by his latest comments, it seems like Berry would welcome him in Cleveland with open arms.
