A mega World Cup event combined with America’s 250th birthday will descend upon D.C. this summer

Washington. D.C., might not be hosting a World Cup match this year, but that doesn’t mean it’s not planning to throw a massive party.

The National Mall is set to be the grounds for an official FIFA World Cup 2026 Fan Zone, offering match viewing, interactive exhibits, family-friendly activations, cultural programing, food, and music.

The Fan Zone will be open from June 11 through July 19, opening daily an hour before the first match and closing an hour after the last. While matches starting after 7 p.m. will not fit into the schedule, all Team USA games will air regardless of the time.

Similar initiatives have been popping around host cities in the United States, offering fans the opportunity to watch the games with other fans without having to spend the record-high ticket prices to attend the match in person.

In New York, for example, free events are hosted around the city’s five boroughs, with cultural programming and watch parties also scheduled for the summer.

The World Cup meets America 250

The National Mall is celebrating more than just the world’s largest sporting event this summer—it’s also celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

The weeks-long activation is a collaboration between FIFA and Freedom 250, a task force dedicated to planning events related to the country’s anniversary. Among those is a slate of flashy events joining the Fan Zone at the National Mall.

While the FIFA Fan Zone is set to take over the area between 3rd and 4th streets, closer to the U.S. Capitol building, an even bigger affair will be hosted on the same ground.

The Great American State Fair will transform the adjoining section of the National Mall into a World’s Fair-like festival featuring showcases from each state and a 110-foot Ferris wheel.

The fair will run from June 25 through July 10, overlapping with the World Cup and July 4 celebrations. Big names are set to provide entertainment, including performances by Flo Rida, Martina McBride, the Commodores, and Bret Michaels.

Programming will also feature Trump-style events like robotics and autonomous vehicle demos, and daily themes like “Make America Healthy Again Monday.”

As if that wasn’t enough for Downtown D.C., an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighting arena is already being built on the White House lawn for a fight on June 14—coincidentally also the president’s birthday.

While the events aim to offer experiential live entertainment during a patriotic season, social media reactions reveal that many are unmoved by the extravagant spectacles. “He’s turned our White House into a circus tent full of clowns,” a user said on X.
