They Championed D.E.I. Now They’re Divided.

In “Divided,” four former D.E.I. leaders come together to examine the system they once built — and question what it’s really doing.

[MUSIC PLAYING] One common D.E.I. practice we can all agree needs to be eliminated is: Training. “Hello, and welcome to Training on Workplace Harassment.” Diversity statements. “Most job applications require, what, a résumé, maybe a few references. But at the University of Washington you’ll also need a one-page diversity statement.” I would just say, there shouldn’t be any D.E.I. Is the Civil Rights Act enough? Yeah, we have laws, right, and enforcement. So if —— We don’t have enforcement. There’s no enforcement anymore. That’s been dismantled. The E.E.O.C. has been —— That’s not true. —— dismantled from what — oh yes. If that’s the case, then that’s the mission. We need to —— But that’s not true. You work at an organization, you’re telling me you’ve never seen a lawsuit where a woman or said person files —— For the past two years? —— and, oh, there is —— It is not being implemented. Oh, it happens all the time. There are tremendous settlements. I would say one thing to eliminate is diversity offices. I don’t disagree with that. Over the course of this conversation, I’ve changed my mind about: Oh, everybody’s looking at me. Well, what did I change my mind about?

In “Divided,” four former D.E.I. leaders come together to examine the system they once built — and question what it’s really doing.
