Jen Shah is challenging one of the most damaging claims tied to her federal fraud case.
In her first interview since leaving prison, the former reality TV star disputes accusations that she intentionally targeted older victims, arguing the narrative oversimplifies a complex situation.
While acknowledging harm caused, Shah insists her role has been misunderstood and says new context changes how she views everything.
Jen Shah Pushes Back On Elderly Narrative
In her first public remarks since her release, Shah addressed what she says is a misconception that has followed her case from the beginning. She directly rejected the idea that she intentionally singled out older individuals.
“I would like to clear up this false narrative that I targeted the elderly,” Shah told PEOPLE. “I never, ever targeted the elderly.”
Her position differs sharply from prosecutors’ portrayal during sentencing, where she was described as a central figure in a sweeping telemarketing fraud scheme.
Authorities argued the operation affected thousands, including elderly and vulnerable victims. Several impact statements submitted to the court highlighted the emotional and financial toll experienced by those individuals.
One widow in her 70s described lasting emotional pain, saying she still struggles with guilt after being misled by sales representatives.
Another victim reported losing more than half of her retirement savings, while others described significant debt, homelessness, and prolonged financial hardship.
One woman wrote that losing over $100,000 caused overwhelming anguish and emotional distress.
Although Shah does not dispute that older individuals were harmed, she argues that the claim that she deliberately pursued them grew from legal technicalities rather than her intentions.
Legal Details And Sentencing Debate
Jen Shah explained that the “elderly” label became central because of sentencing enhancements tied to victims’ ages. She pointed to how the indictment framed the issue.
“In the indictment, the government stated that if there are 10 customers over the age of 55, then it becomes elderly enhancement, which would add more time to my sentence,” she said.
She added that the label turned into a repeated soundbite accusing her of stealing from seniors, which she insists is inaccurate.
Shah also maintained she never had direct contact with customers and described the business structure as layered. According to Shah, fulfillment and customer interactions often occurred beyond her involvement, with other individuals handling later stages of transactions.
The “Real Housewives of Salt Lake City” alum further suggested she believed she was operating legitimately at the time, explaining that she trusted the people running the companies and later realized she should have exercised more caution.
She acknowledged that she placed too much confidence in colleagues and failed to scrutinize operations closely.
Her explanation centers on the idea that misconduct occurred down the chain, beyond her immediate awareness.
According to her, that realization came late in the legal process.
Jen Shah Says Evidence Changed Her Perspective
Shah further stated that the turning point came when prosecutors shared discovery materials weeks before trial. She described seeing proof of victims for the first time.
“I saw for the first time that there were people who were hurt; that there were actual victims as a result of this conspiracy,” she said. “I had never seen anything with my own eyes. That changed things for me.”
She reiterated that she never intended harm and did not knowingly construct a plan targeting older individuals.
Shah again emphasized that she had no direct contact with customers and insisted the outcome differed from her understanding of how the businesses operated.
Cultural Impact And Accountability
Despite that stance, Jen Shah acknowledged responsibility for her role. She explained that respecting elders is deeply rooted in her cultural background and that seeing older individuals affected weighed heavily on her.
Shah shared, “One of the pillars of the Tongan Polynesian culture is to respect your elders. To watch that play out, it hurt me so much because that’s my ancestors.”
She indicated that this personal connection influenced her decision to accept accountability and focus on restitution.
The reality TV star was ordered to pay more than $6.6 million to victims, and has already begun making payments.
Her early release to home confinement followed good behavior and compliance with court requirements.

Shah also addressed why she remained silent until now. “With the legal process, I was directed by counsel to not give any interviews,” she explained, noting it was difficult to watch narratives develop while she could not respond.
She added that she wanted to address misconceptions but followed legal advice to stay quiet.
Now speaking publicly, she offered an apology to those affected. “I’d like to say that I’m sorry and I’m here and accepting responsibility and have made it my mission as part of my consequences to make sure that people are paid back through the restitution,” she said.
She continued by expressing regret for not being more diligent and for being associated with individuals involved in wrongdoing, adding that victims deserve to be made whole.
Her comments mark the first time she has addressed the accusations directly since leaving prison.
While debate over her role continues, Shah appears focused on clarifying her perspective while acknowledging the lasting consequences of the case.
