A timeline of Tiger Woods’ legal troubles and potential impact on his legacy

Tiger Woods has spent decades doing things on a golf course that nobody else could replicate.

Off the course, there has been a different pattern. One that keeps resurfacing at the worst possible times.

And now, with the Masters approaching, that pattern is not just part of his story. It is part of how his career will ultimately be remembered.

2009: The crash that changed his life

It started with a late-night car crash outside his Florida home the day after Thanksgiving.

Woods hit a fire hydrant and a tree. Within days, the story exploded and captured national attention. Affairs were revealed, endorsements disappeared and the version of Tiger Woods people thought they knew vanished almost overnight. His family life changed forever following the incident.

2017: A DUI and mugshot gone viral

In May 2017, Woods was arrested on suspicion of DUI after being found asleep in his car. The mugshot spread everywhere within hours. He later said it was a reaction to prescription medication, not alcohol, according to ESPN.

Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving and entered into a diversion program.

2021: A near life threatening crash in California

Then came the crash in California in February 2021.

There were no reports of impairment and or charges issued. Woods, however, had severe injuries and another round of questions. Speed, control, decision making. Even though the legal side was clear, questions loomed as if there was a catalyst that had not been made public.

By this point, every incident was not just being judged on its own. It was being stacked on top of the others.

2026: DUI arrest in Florida and release from jail

Woods was arrested following a rollover crash in Florida after attempting to pass a vehicle at high speed. He was later released from jail, with footage and a mugshot quickly circulating.

There was no alcohol detected, but he refused further testing and now faces multiple charges, including a DUI.

Tiger Woods’ legacy has been impacted by his personal woes

At some point, this stops being about individual incidents and starts being about what they took away.

Tiger Woods does not just have a complicated timeline. He has a disrupted golf career.

From 2009 on, the most dominant golfer of his era was no longer just competing against the field. He was dealing with injuries, personal fallout, legal issues and long stretches away from the game. His momentum vanished, and entire years that should have added to his legacy instead became gaps in it.

He still found a way to win again. That is what makes it even more frustrating to look back on.

The question then has to be asked. How many more majors were there? He did not just lose time. He lost opportunities at the exact moment he was built to take advantage of them.

And that is what these moments represent now.

    Not just headlines or setbacks.

They are reminders that even the greatest career of all time still left something on the table.
