Miley Cyrus is officially stepping back into one of her most iconic roles, and Disney Channel fans are about to be seriously nostalgic. The singer and actress is preparing to reprise her role as Hannah Montana for a special celebrating the show’s 20th anniversary, and it’s already shaping up to be packed with surprises, familiar faces, and major throwback moments.

One of the biggest reveals? Selena Gomez is set to make a surprise appearance in the highly anticipated special.

The exciting detail came during an interview with Variety, where it was revealed that host Alex Cooper arranged the cameo without Cyrus knowing ahead of time. “I love Selena, but I didn’t know how much our friendship meant to the fans,” Cyrus said.

Selena Gomez famously appeared on three episodes of “Hannah Montana,” playing pop rival Mikayla Skeech, making her return even more meaningful for longtime viewers. And while Gomez’s appearance is already generating buzz, she won’t be the only familiar face returning.

According to Disney, additional cameos are planned, though many have yet to be revealed. Miley Cyrus’ parents, Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus-Purcell, are also expected to be part of the special.

The upcoming special won’t just be about nostalgia. It’s also set to include deeply personal moments.

According to Miley Cyrus, host Alex Cooper suggested opening the show with a reflective scene, capturing her driving from Malibu to the soundstage. “I didn’t think about the correlation between Hannah’s house in Malibu and my house in Malibu,” Cyrus said. “And my house burning down and me rebuilding.”

From there, the special transitions into the performances fans have been waiting for. Miley Cyrus revealed she hasn’t performed “Best of Both Worlds” since 2008, but stepping back into it came naturally. “It was literally a bike. The dancers were doing stuff, and I’m like, ‘That’s not original!’” she said. “And they’re like, ‘Well, we’re trying to make it modern.’ I’m like, ‘It ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’”

Cyrus has already teased that the special will deliver big moments, and she’s not holding back on the hype.

“I didn’t want to do this modern approach to Hannah. I wanted to keep it preserved,” Miley Cyrus told Variety. “But also, now Hannah wears Gucci. She’s elevated. She’s gotta look a little less Galleria.”

As she revisits the role, Miley Cyrus is also reflecting on what it was like to grow up as one of the most recognizable teen stars of her generation. “Being recognizable as a teen going through different phases and stages was sometimes awkward,” the singer said. “But that’s what helped me relate to the kids watching at home.”

The “Party in the U.S.A.” singer also addressed her decision to step away from her Disney image at the time. “I boldly and unapologetically presented myself to the world at that time, where I could have gone the other way and played it safe,” she continued. “Maybe that would have been successful at the time, and it wouldn’t have been such a cross to bear, but I wouldn’t have had the reward.”

Miley added, “I don’t know if I would have had the sustainability that my career has now.”

The recent comments come just months after Cyrus and Gomez had fans reeling with a reunion moment at the 2026 Golden Globes. A photo of the two stars sitting together quickly made the rounds online, with Gomez later sharing the image to her Instagram Stories and writing, “looove” alongside a sun emoji.

With their friendship back in the spotlight and a new “Hannah Montana” special on the way, it’s clear Disney fans are in for a major nostalgic moment.

The “Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special” will stream on March 24 on Disney+ and Hulu.
