Cynthia Bailey Gets Candid About The Recent Conversation She Had With Mary Cosby Following Her Son’s Death

“It’s so hard to talk about this,” Bailey told her co-host, Crystal Kung Minkoff, during the March 2nd episode of their shared podcast. “I was really paralyzed by this news when I got it, and I didn’t really know what to do, what to say.”

Bailey went on to say that she called Mary almost instantly after learning her son passed away. Bailey then explained that she didn’t believe texting Mary during a time like this was appropriate.

During their conversation, Bailey said she offered Mary her condolences and sent her family well-wishes. “I just wanted to call you and say, ‘I love you, and I’m here for you, and I’m so sorry for you and your family,'” she said.

Bailey said that Mary kept assuring her that she was “OK” during their phone call, something Bailey believes stems from being overcome with emotion.

“I think there’s levels, there’s shock, there’s just processing the reality of the situation,” she said. “I know I’m doing a horrible job of trying to explain this to you guys, but I just don’t know any other way to do it. I just wanted to recognize that we are all supporting Mary Cosby and her family. This was a huge hit for the Bravo universe. She’s such a big part of it.”

According to a previous report from The Blast, Mary’s 23-year-old son, Robert, died in late February 2026 after Salt Lake City police responded to a call about a possible overdose.

Authorities confirmed that Robert was dead upon arrival; however, his cause of death is still being investigated by the medical examiner, per NBC News.

Mary broke her silence shortly after news of Robert’s sudden death was made public.

“Our beloved son Robert Jr. has been called home to the Lord,” she shared on Instagram. “Though our hearts ache, we take comfort in God’s promise and in knowing he is finally at peace. We are grateful for your prayers and trust in the Lord to carry us through this time of sorrow.”

Robert Spoke With His Mother About His Struggles With Addiction During An Emotional Episode Of ‘RHOSLC’

Robert’s death comes a little over a year after an emotional episode of “RHOSLC” aired in which he spoke openly with his mother about his struggles with addiction.

At the time, Robert admitted to using Xanax to help balance him out, revealing that using drugs helps him feel like he’s “adding seasoning to [my life].”

“Then, I started doing Xanax with Acid, and then Molly with Xanax. I really like Xanax, so I mix it with everything. Xanax and cocaine. You know the regular 30mg Oxys? I noticed … this was, like, a turning point for me. I was taking 10 at once, and I couldn’t even feel it,” he said.

Cynthia explained during the “Humble Brag” episode that she asked Mary about Robert’s well-being during filming of the “Real Housewives” 20th-anniversary special in January 2026.

“I think at that point he was in jail or just getting out. She was very optimistic. We were all excited for him to get better. I guess I don’t even know the right words,” Bailey said.

Robert was released from jail two weeks before his death in February 2026. According to PEOPLE, he was in jail after pleading guilty to eight charges after an incident with his ex-wife, Alexiana Arian Smokoff.

During the “RHOSLC” season 6 reunion, Mary admitted to feeling relieved knowing Robert was behind bars, unable to access drugs.

“Unfortunately, he’s learning the hard way, but I’m okay with it,” she said. “It’s just, you don’t wanna see your kid suffer, but I know it’s good, and I’d rather him be there than dead.”
