An Iranian’s Account of the Day Khamenei Was Killed

Speaking from Iran, a 25-year-old woman recounted the mix of joy and hope that took hold after news broke that the country’s supreme leader had been killed in a series of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes.

I heard the news of his death on TV. Suddenly, people came out and were celebrating. We are so full of joy. When I woke up around 10 a.m., I realized that the attacks had started. The internet was completely cut off around 11 a.m. our time, I am currently connected by trying many VPNs. I didn’t expect [Ayatollah Ali] Khamenei to be killed on the first day. Suddenly, I saw people shouting slogans against the regime from the windows, and I heard that people came out in cars or even on foot on the main streets of the city and were celebrating. Although there was no security, it seemed that a few agents came, a few forces came and people returned home, but the slogans from the windows continued. When I talk to my friends, we are so full of excitement, full of joy, that we don’t know how to calm down. I hadn’t seen my mother cry for years, but tonight I saw her crying with joy. My only concern is that the Islamic republic remains after the attacks. Can I see a complete democracy in Iran? This is my wish. And I hope we achieve it as soon as possible.
