Why Bobby Petrino-Bill Belichick pairing at North Carolina seems destined to flop

One of the most scrutinized college football programs in the country is about to be under an even bigger microscope.

On Monday, it was reported that Bobby Petrino, most recently the offensive coordinator and interim head coach at Arkansas, has agreed to become Bill Belichick’s offensive coordinator at North Carolina following the dismissal of Freddie Kitchens.

The pairing will bring another big name into the fold at UNC, which is looking to get back on track after a 4-8 season in Belichick’s first year in Chapel Hill.

Bill Belichick, Bobby Petrino pairing at North Carolina not shiny now

In 2011, with Belichick commanding an NFL dynasty with the New England Patriots and Petrino turning Arkansas into a bona fide national contender, this pairing would’ve been seen as monumental. It still is buzzworthy, but not for the right reason. Petrino and Belichick are more renowned now for their names than their current coaching acumen.

Petrino saw his tenure as Arkansas head coach end in April 2012 after he lied about the circumstances of a motorcycle crash that involved a staffer he was having an extramarital affair with. He’s hasn’t found much success anywhere else besides Louisville, where he coached from 2014-18; 2016 Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson played for Petrino there.

As Arkansas’ interim head coach this season, Petrino went 0-7. He’s built a reputation as a coach who is ready to go wherever the wind takes him. Meanwhile, Belichick failed to make the NFL playoffs in his last two seasons with the Patriots, going 8-9 and 4-13.

There’s no denying that Petrino is a splash hire for Belichick, whose Tar Heels desperately need a competent, functioning offense in 2026. In 2025, Belichick’s offense stunk, averaging 19.2 points (119th in nation). Petrino’s offenses at Arkansas consistently moved the ball and scored, but they also fell flat in big moments, leading to Razorbacks finishing 2-10 this season.

The hype train around Belichick that once enveloped Chapel Hill has long since left the station. The Tar Heels’ lackluster season, combined with some PR disasters — most notably, the slew of stories regarding Belichick’s girlfriend, Jordon Hudson — has led to UNC no longer being the alluring destination it was a year ago.

If you simply consider the overall resumes of the 73-year-old Belichick and 64-year-old Petrino, their partnership at UNC seems destined to succeed. But in actuality, this new HC-OC pairing in Chapel Hill seems destined simply to flop.
